Canadian label embraces CopyLeft CanFLI Network :: Informing the Canadian file-sharing public

With over 30 released titles distributed in 15 countries by over a dozen artists, Fading Ways is Canada's most vibrant young label. Leyton explains: "Put simply, CopyLeft and the Creative Commons licenses means that if a fan copies a CD to give to a friend, they are not breaking the law. Even if they upload an MP3 and share it with other web users they are not breaking the law as long as due credit is given and they are not making any money out of distributing the artists' work."

Fact: Lyle Lovett The New Yorker

For most of his career, his persona has been ambiguous. Billy Williams, his producer, says, “Lyle mistakenly sees himself as an ordinary human being.” Bonnie Raitt, with whom he made his first big tour, in 1986, following her bus in his pickup, regarded the way he looked—the skinny-legged suits, the hair rising like a bloom—as exotic. “He was always very sartorially astute,” she says. A Texas musician in Nashville who met Lovett before he was famous once told a reporter, “I took one look at him and pegged him for a French blues singer.” Lovett is not a demonstrative person. Raitt describes his temperament admiringly as “a banked fire.” Many women find him deeply attractive. Raitt also told me that sometimes when she and Lovett perform together and he looks over at her, she feels her “knees buckle.”

"It can't get much rarer than this. We don't have documents, only coins, and it is frustrating that we do not know more about Domitianus. We do not know where he came from and we do not know how or when he died. But we know he existed."

SUBS ARE A DOLLAR OFF! The Creatures From the Sandwich Shop - Behind the singing rodents in the Quiznos ad. By Seth Stevenson

These characters come from a man named Joel Veitch, who makes television shows for the BBC (according to his Web site, www.rathergood.com). On his site, you can see these creatures in a January 2003 video clip, in which they sing about loving the moon, marmots, cheese, dirigibles, and several other nouns. The clip, which calls the characters "spongmonkeys," seems pretty clearly the basis for the Quiznos ad. (Quiznos says a guy from their ad firm received the clip in an e-mail from a friend and decided it was perfect for a new campaign.)

They're so cute when they grow up The Third Annual Valentine's Day Bender

Prior to this year, the bender has been a small affair, with no documentation aside from hearsay. (The first year that the bender was started, I was credited as lying on the couch with a bottle of tequila, yelling at the top of my lungs about how the only woman I needed was a bottle.
