Why Is Quantum Physics Beautiful? Closer To Truth - (Show 207)

If you think "Quantum Physics" sounds too difficult, unfortunately, it's even worse than that. Nobody in his right mind, my friends warn me, would dare do television like this. So here I am, doing it -- because Quantum Physics is real and relevant, and because every literate person should appreciate its profound beauty. This show is an impassioned word portrait of a new reality.

Weeping kids defend beatings LFP Local News

In January 2001, a second family with Aylmer's Church of God was investigated by the agency, called in because someone complained their children had been playing after dark. That family admitted hitting their children with objects and gave the agency a book, called Mommy, Daddy, We Would See Jesus, which they said helped guide them. The book instructs parents to hit children as young as six months. The Aylmer church at the time sold the book to followers.

From breadbasket to basket case Economist.com | Zimbabwe

From June 25th, some 2,900 white farmers, whose farms have been earmarked to be seized and given to blacks, were legally obliged to cease work. Those who continue to plough, weed and scatter seeds face jail terms of up to two years. Generously, the government said it would allow them to continue living in their homes for another 45 days, but then they must leave. In theory, they are permitted to take their portable possessions away with them, but in practice, police and ruling-party militiamen at roadblocks often prevent them from escaping with anything too valuable. Mr Mugabe's cronies, relatives and assorted mobsters covet their pick-up trucks and threshing machines.

These facts fly in the face of the populist myth that the rich countries, often acting through the conditionality imposed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), have demolished the trade barriers of the poor countries while holding on to their own. Indeed, both the omnipotence of the Bretton Woods institutions, and the wickedness of the rich countries, have been grossly exaggerated.

New Net laws reach beyond borders From The Globe and Mail

As Canada debates digital copyright reforms (with many fearing the introduction of a Canadianized version of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act), the reality is that the DMCA may already be applicable in Canada. Prosecutors in California, who are pursuing a DMCA criminal action against Elcomsoft, a Russian software firm, have argued that the U.S. Congress explicitly drafted the copyright law in an extra-territorial manner so that it could be applied to activities that originate in Russia. If true, the same logic could easily be applied to Canadian firms that run afoul of the U.S. statute.

So what happened to "turquoise" ?

The Cosmic Spectrum

We found a bug in our code! In our original calculation, which you may have read in the press, we used (in good faith) software with a non-standard white point. Rather it was supposed to use a D65 white point, but did not apply it. The result was an effective white point somewhat redder than Illuminant E (as if some red neon lights were around) at 0.365,0.335. Although the x,y values of the Universe are unchanged from our original calculation the shift in the white point made the universe appear 'turquoise'. (i.e.  x,y, remains the same, but the corresponding effective RGB values shift).

James Q. Wilson on Death Penalty & Mentally Retarded

Flashback: National Review Online

...these precise questions are ordinarily brought before the court (and should be brought before it in every relevant case) as a matter of elementary fairness. No court should allow a person to plead guilty wrongly or to give his lawyer inadequate help.

This piece is interesting, though it has an overlying shrillness that I find unsettling. The idea he seems to be getting at, albeit in a sideways manner, is that it's inappropriate to fix a legal conundrum with patches of subjective exclusion. If there's a problem, fix the problem, don't set up segregated ramps around it.

Top Court Bars Execution of Mentally Retarded

Yahoo! News

"We are not persuaded that the execution of mentally retarded criminals will measurably advance the deterrent or the retributive purpose of the death penalty," Justice John Paul Stevens (news - web sites) wrote for the court majority in the 17-page opinion.

If I was going to execute anybody, I'd execute criminals that are mentally retarded or insane. I don't see any purpose in financially supporting criminals that are too biologically defective to rehabilitate. Given that there is a finite amount of money in any economy, I would choose to spend more money on people who haven't done anything, like schoolchildren, than on criminals, particularly criminals that are not expected to recover.

The only reason I can imagine to not execute retarded or sociopathic criminals is to allow pretense that incarceration is a useful form of social engineering.

While I do believe ostracism (not necessarily the full ten year Athenian variety) can be a useful mode of punishment, I think the old methods of dumping serious criminals on a rock somewhere and letting them make their own society is a lot more effective. Incarceration -- as with anything that requires a group to be consistently together, like working for the same company or serving in the same military unit -- promotes social formations as well, but since the system is so constricted, the society can't evolve beyond the tribal level. The tribe becomes the family and the tribe's ethics imprint on the new member. This makes it extremely unlikely for most people to break criminal associations once formed -- just as an adult is unlikely to fully reject the teachings of his childhood. Hence the idea that probationers must stay away from other criminals: to disrupt the tribal impulse.

Were I redefining the criminal punishment and reform system, I would separate out those who are intentionally destructive (sociopaths), those who are unconsciously destructive (mentally retarded), and determine individually whether there's any point in keeping a given one alive -- or whether the person should be shot like a rabid dog. The remainder I'd offer the option of education (at their expense -- student loans to be paid back when upon release) or training in a trade, at which they would work until released. I would target 90% employment upon release; mandatory for those who have accumulated student loans (unless they are doing a long-term degree and will be finishing it in the actual school).

This is, of course, a perfect world, where relatively frequent use of the death penalty on those too insane or retarded to rehabilitate would not be misused to protect the powerful by misplacing blame on those who can't defend themselves. Or misplacing blame on those who are politically inconvenient and then bribing experts to call them insane.

'Smart Bandage' Diagnoses Danger Before Infection Takes Hold

University of Rochester Press Releases

Sunday Night Sex Show

Oxygen TV

Hosted by sex expert Sue Johanson, Sunday Night Sex Show is a talk show that offers helpful guidance on the complex topics of love, relationships and sex. Whether it's the latest in pleasure devices from the Sunday Night Sex Show Pleasure Chest or the annual Valentine's Day special, the show offers advice on revitalizing your sex life, pleasing yourself and your partner, and understanding the latest information on STDs and sexual disorders.

So even Americans can get the Sunday Night Sex Show. Good! Can't do you any harm. This program is commonsensical, factual, practical and straightforward. It does get a bit repetitive with Sue continually having to reassure women that it is perfectly normal to not be able to deep throat, and it's not even a good idea to try it. Or the "my boyfriend has a huge penis and I have ten orgasms at a time, is that normal?" callers. Still, usually at least half the calls are peculiar and interesting. She also reviews a sex toy and a sexuality book (not erotic, but theraputic) every episode.

Land for women answer to hunger, food summit told

Reuters Health Information (2002-06-12)

Yet women own only about 1% of the world's land, delegates told the UN-organized event, and in too many countries land distribution and land rights remain weighted toward men either by law or tradition.

While an interesting piece, it gives very selective statistics. Who owns the other 99%? Government? Anybody? What's the value of the land owned by women? Beachfront property on the Sahara isn't as good as a classic 6 townhouse on the Upper West Side. A piece like that can do more harm than good because people instinctively sense they're being shoved in a certain direction, and push back.
