My Mother, the Scientist

Popular Science

To become a scientist is hard enough. But to become one while running a gauntlet of lies, insults, mockeries, and disapproval--this was what my mother had to do. If such treatment is unthinkable (or, at least, unusual) today, it is largely because my mother and other female scientists of her generation proved equal to every obstacle thrown in their way.

Esther Dyson on Internet privacy

Tech News - CNET.com

"Ira Magaziner was an idealist," commented Dyson, referring to the Clinton administration's Internet policy czar who advocated ICANN as an agency without direct government control. "He said that the domain-name system would operate worldwide and he wanted the Internet community to take care of it...But there really is no Internet community like that. We had engineers who thought ICANN was a plot to (give) certain companies control of the Internet, U.S. congressmen figuring it was a plot to (give) foreigners control, public interest people saying it should be run by a group of wise men, and people from Latin America and Africa who just assumed they would be left out again."
