My Mother, the Scientist
To become a scientist is hard enough. But to become one while running a gauntlet of lies, insults, mockeries, and disapproval--this was what my mother had to do. If such treatment is unthinkable (or, at least, unusual) today, it is largely because my mother and other female scientists of her generation proved equal to every obstacle thrown in their way. Esther Dyson on Internet privacy
"Ira Magaziner was an idealist," commented Dyson, referring to the Clinton administration's Internet policy czar who advocated ICANN as an agency without direct government control. "He said that the domain-name system would operate worldwide and he wanted the Internet community to take care of it...But there really is no Internet community like that. We had engineers who thought ICANN was a plot to (give) certain companies control of the Internet, U.S. congressmen figuring it was a plot to (give) foreigners control, public interest people saying it should be run by a group of wise men, and people from Latin America and Africa who just assumed they would be left out again." The trials of Henry Kissinger
The name of the Spanish judge will come as no surprise. He is Baltazar Garzon, the magistrate who in 1998 sought the extradition from Britain of General Augusto Pinochet to answer charges that the old dictator ordered the murder of Spanish citizens, among the estimated 4,000 people who either disappeared or were killed after the September 1973 coup that toppled the elected civilian president Salvador Allende. The extradition request was finally denied by the Law Lords on the technical ground that the Chilean dictator, who by then had suffered at least one heart attack, was too old to face trial. But Garzon is no respecter of persons, and his tenacity is legendary. Pinochet was the prime mover behind Operation Condor %uFFD0 which, in addition to Chile, also covered Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Uruguay. Meanwhile, declassified documents released by the State Department and the CIA since his detention have strengthened suspicions that Kissinger, as Nixon's national security adviser and in effective full control of US foreign policy, was well aware of what was happening. Vanilla thriller
Economist.com | Food flavourings Pure crystals of vanillin can be produced biologically by bacteria that munch plant waste. Only recently, however, have a few such processes been commercialised. Zylepsis, a private British company, has pioneered vanillin production using bugs and has obtained high-quality results, although its product remains relatively expensive. It also confounds current labelling rules. Zylepsis's vanillin is a natural product, rather than a chemical one, but it does not qualify as such in America because it contains no actual vanilla extract. Even more confusing, food companies often want to blend fully natural vanilla with the artificially produced, though technically natural, kind. How should such a hybrid be described? Holly Sommer, Party Girl
The next day, a large portion of the tinglers (who numbered over 30, I believe) visited Tijuana. Along the way, we stopped to do some shopping, where an interesting assortment of things were purchased, including a bullwhip, the ObSombrero and plenty of (cheap) liquor. A few people were tempted with Prozac, which was sold by the pound, almost, but we decided smuggling anything in across the border in spare body cavities wasn't a very palatable idea. The mysterious Vancouver connection
Williams, his one-time colleague Sally Gardner, and an anonymous cameraman were part of the same production unit at CBC Television in Vancouver in the late 1970s; all worked with Michael J. Fox before he became a star; all four are now losing control of their bodies to a cruel, dehumanizing disease. Why? Williams, 64, directed Fox in an episode of a short-lived sitcom called Nellie, Daniel, Emma and Ben, which aired in 1979. It was Fox's second gig, after his debut in the CBC comedy Leo and Me. Today, Williams is able to joke about his debilitating affliction. "I often say it's because when Michael J. and I worked together, we had to work with terrible scripts -- it destroyed our brain cells." Posted by GeeTee at April 23, 2002 01:44 PM
New media art calls for new media architecture
While Europe boasts some spaces devoted to new media art, the US has nothing comparable--that is the gap Eyebeam seeks to fill. Johnson, who founded the not-for-profit organisation in 1996. Along with a selection committee, Mr Johnson chose Diller Scofidio's design from after an 18-month competition of 30 architects; the winner was announced on 18 March. Key case restores copyright balance
From The Globe and Mail -- Canada's Most Trusted News Source The gallery's technology was state of the art -- it used a process that literally lifted the ink off the poster and transferred it to the canvass. The gallery did not create any new images or reproductions of the work, since the poster paper was left blank after the process was complete.Mr. Theberge was nevertheless outraged -- he believed he had sold paper posters, not canvass-based reproductions -- and he proceeded to sue in Quebec court, requesting an injunction to stop the transfers as well as the seizure of the existing canvass-backed images.Although the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the seizure, a divided Supreme Court overturned that decision, finding that the images were merely transferred from one medium to another and not reproduced contrary to the Copyright Act. Cybersex Fans Say Computers Really Satisfy Apart from the word's power of suggestion on chat rooms, the cyber sex users also transmit messages with the help of multi media -images and sounds- which are meant to generate a certain reaction in the virtual partner. For this, they can resort to adult sites or even web cameras that they install on their computers. But why would they give up the advantages and nice sensations offered by the human senses (eye contact, smell, touch, taste and voice sensuality) in favor of artificial incentives? Cristian Andrei, psychologist, blames it on the lack of self-confidence of the young generations in the Internet era. He also explains the mechanism of cyber sex: "Exchanging insinuating words, describing things about their sexuality, such as what they are wearing, how they look or feel, the virtual partners can use the Internet in order to induce sexual desire". The internet sells its soul
Economist.com | Internet advertising In retrospect, more aggressive commercialisation of the Internet seemed bound to happen. As the thousands of dotcoms that have already gone to the wall discovered, making money on the Internet is not easy--especially from advertising. Yahoo! might be one of the biggest Internet portals with more than 230m users, but it is now desperately trying to reduce its reliance on ad revenues by providing new paid-for services and content. Last week, the firm posted its sixth consecutive quarterly loss. If users do not go to a special site in the next 60 days to change their "preferences", they are likely to be barraged by e-mails, telephone calls and other direct-marketing material. Education: What Time Is It There?
The Village Voice, by Dennis Lim Given the unyielding laws of physics, it may come as a surprise that travel into the future--or at least a restricted form thereof--is a proven fact. Einstein shattered Newton's view of absolute time, "flowing equably without relation to anything external," by identifying a "time dilation" effect. Time is stretched by motion, Einstein theorized, and moving objects age more slowly. On a high-speed trip, clocks tick slower: An astronaut's wristwatch and biological clock, like his pulse rate, would slow down relative to someone who remains on Earth. The net effect is that he gains time on his journey. The higher the velocity, the greater the dilation factor. Consider an example given in Davies's book: A round-trip flight to a star 10 light-years away at almost the speed of light (180,000 miles per second) would take just over 20 Earth years, but the astronaut would age less than three years on the trip, so upon her return, she has effectively traveled 17 years into the future. Can't beat the buffet
The space-time continuum is a key aspect of the buffet: when you really try to pack the food in, you run out of time (and space) in a hurry. When I worked in Edmonton a few years ago, a photographer taught me that it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell the brain that it's full -- giving you a 20-minute window to stuff yourself. As he tossed back shrimp after shrimp, I learned how important that rule can be to some people. The fear and regret in his eyes at the 15-minute mark when he realized he hadn't even got to the shanghai noodles, said it all. Posted by GeeTee at April 13, 2002 02:58 PM

Russia's flat tax rakes in the cash, but the `shadow economy' still looms large
Last year, President Vladimir Putin introduced a flat tax on income of 13 percent -- the lowest rate in Europe -- designed to draw more Russians out of the "shadow economy" and make them honest taxpayers. The results have been dramatic. Revenue from personal income tax shot up nearly 47 percent last year, and tax revenue overall rose 50 percent, according to government figures. Early results from 2002 look even better. Posted by GeeTee at April 13, 2002 02:35 PM
how to save up for your future
When I got down to business the first time, my experience was almost identical to Grant's. But while he was able to maintain steady pressure on his perineum until his pulsating prostate gave up on trying to give forth, I got nervous, eased up the pressure after about ten seconds and let the love juice fly. (This was mostly because, somewhere in the back of my mind, I could hear my horrified mother's reaction to my future inability to provide her with grandchildren: "What do mean you broke your penis?") Raunchy merchandise on virtually every stand
There is always one seemingly ubiquitous artist at every fair and this year it was Sarah Morris with her paintings, as well as much jokey art-about-art, the same John Currin image being teased by both Matthew Higgs at Murray Guy and Kakanias at Rebecca Camhi. But most noticeable of all was the aforementioned sexualised work, a typical showstopper being the DVD video "Fucked" proudly on display at Modern Culture at the Gershwin, featuring a 19 year old female artist trying to apply make-up while being firmly boffed from behind. Lasting three minutes and in an edition of nine, they had all rapidly sold out at prices from $550 to $1,200. Posted by GeeTee at April 12, 2002 04:18 PM

Lawsuit over 'Spider-Man' billboard switcheroo
Can you sue someone for not using your logo without your permission? The owners of a building situated on Manhattan's Times Square think you can. Their complaint has to do with several sequences in the new Columbia Pictures movie "Spider-Man," starring Toby Maguire. In the scenes, the superhero, web-slinging his way across the city, swings past the facade of 2 Times Square, which in real-life bears a giant electronic Samsung billboard. The filmmakers, however, digitally replaced the ad with one for USA Today--which, unlike Samsung, isn't a direct competitor of Columbia Pictures owner Sony. Sherwood 48 Associates, the owners of the building, have filed suit against Columbia Pictures, arguing that it was "inappropriate" to change the billboard, according to the New York Daily News. Impressions after riding a Segway HT
As a 50-year old, I experienced the Segway as I experienced getting reading glasses: A way to augment my body back to a healthy youth. I can carry heavy loads that would hurt my now-sensitive back. If my knees or heart get worse, I can still run or go distances on a hike with younger loved ones. This will be a very big hit with the 45 and over crowd. If somebody bumps into Grandpa with it, it will be Grandma, and she votes. For younger people, the Segway opens up new areas that are now within "walking distance", for older people it restores old areas that are missed. People with all sorts of disabilities (MS, Parkinson's, knee injuries, etc.) are begging the Segway company for units. They know it will change their lives, restoring some normalcy. Seeing Around Corners | Rauch
"There are plenty of different cities and countries that have gone from a high degree of corruption to a low degree of corruption," Hammond says. His A-society suggests that in such a transition, the fear of being caught may be at least as important as the odds of actually being caught. To test that possibility, Hammond re-ran his simulation, but this time he allowed all the agents to know not just how many of their friends were in jail but how many people were jailed throughout the whole society: in other words, the agents knew the odds of arrest as well as the police did. Sure enough, fully informed agents never got scared enough to reform. Hammond's A-society seemed to have "grown" a piece of knowledge that many law-enforcement agencies (think of the Internal Revenue Service, with its targeted, high-profile audits) have long intuited--namely, that limited resources are often more effectively spent on fearsome, and fearsomely unpredictable, high-profile sweeps than on uniform and thus easily second-guessed patterns of enforcement. Who Controls New Media? Open Art in Closed Systems
"Who Controls New Media" examines the historical roots of this shift, from Bertold Brecht's emancipatory theory of radio in the 1920s to Nam June Paik's Participation TV in the 1960s to the rise of Internet art in the 1990s. Following this analysis the participants present a number of contemporary attempts to reassert open protocols in what many artists see as an increasingly closed society. The discussion is punctuated by audiovisual documentation of artwork from such historical figures as John Cage as well as cutting-edge artworks from today's Internet. Realism May Be Taking the Fun Out of Games
There may be, in fact, a tension in the video game universe: technological powers are courted for their possibilities and resisted for their fetishistic demands. Technology's greatest achievement may be in the improvements in racing games, shooting games and fighting games. There, the simulation of realism is most important because the very point of the games is to create a physical sensation, an anxiety, punctuated by shocks and cries. An advertisement for a game called "Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing" boasted about the game's sophisticated "facial damage engine," calling it "brutal beyond belief." Passing the trash
By and large, as Ms Shakeshaft points out, institutions protect the adults and not the children. At worst, fearing legal liability and damage to their reputations (and often prodded by lawyers and insurance companies), they come to a private settlement with the offender. "The first instinct is to get them out of your organisation," says Mr Allen. As in the case of Mr Fry, the perpetrator is sent away with nothing but praise in the personnel file. Such cases are so common that educators have coined the term "passing the trash". A 1995 study of 225 cases in which pupils were sexually abused by teachers or other staff members found that in only 1% of the cases did the school-district superintendent attempt to revoke the culprit's teaching licence. Stock Options' Perverse Incentives
Fool.com: [Fool on the Hill] April 3, 2002 A company can effectively reprice options without having to recognize the cost by canceling existing ones and then issuing new ones, but there's a catch -- it has to wait six months before setting the strike price for the new options. Companies like Sprint, Qwest, i2, Inktomi, RealNetworks, Commerce One,and WorldcCom have all taken advantage of this, but it creates truly bizarre incentives: If a company expected its stock price to go up in the next six months, would it offer such a plan? It's unlikely, as employees would be furious that they'd been forced to wait rather than take advantage of the current low share price. Worse yet, employees actually have an incentive to keep the share price down until after the new strike price is set. Posted by GeeTee at April 04, 2002 05:39 AM

PAUL MARTIN QUITS POLITICS
BOURQUE NEWSWATCH - TOMORROW'S NEWS NOW ! Bourque has learned that longtime Finance Minister Paul Martin has decided to quit his Cabinet position, resign his seat in Parliament, and leave the world of politics. The dramatic announcement will come sometime late today (Monday), affording the Liberal Party favourite enough time to work the phones to personally thank longtime supporters across the country for their loyalty. Until then, nobody is saying anything publicly. But according to key insiders who spoke only on condition of anonymity, Martin has determined that the leadership of his Party and the Office of the Prime Minister are no longer within his reach. It is expected that his sudden exit will rock Official Ottawa. It is understood that Prime Minister Jean Chretien has been made aware of Martin's decision and is said to be preparing a dramatic overhaul to his Cabinet where a bedrock Chretien loyalist will take over the Finance portfolio, while others known to be Martin pilot fish are expected to be dropped from Cabinet altogether. Within the Liberal Party, one insider predicted mayhem "from the riding level on up". Indeed, with a Martin leadership candidacy wiped from the horizon, so-called "Martinites" can expect a devastating purge not to their liking. As for Martin himself, a successful businessman, it is said he will retire to a quieter life outside of the limelight to devote greater time to his wife and to a burgeoning hobby interest in the breeding of prize Charolais cattle and handsome "Fawn Runner" ducks which he hopes to show this fall at the Brome Lake & Havelock fairs.
