FAA covering up 9-11 gun, whistleblower agent says WorldNetDaily

An internal Federal Aviation Administration memo detailing a shooting aboard hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 is not likely a mistake, as claimed, and the government and the airline may be denying the existence of a gun aboard the plane out of fear of being sued by Sept. 11 victims' families, charges a former veteran FAA special agent familiar with the memo and its source.

Cybersecurity bill passes US House subcommittee CW360° - Article Page

The Cyber Security and Enhancement Act of 2001 (HR-3482), introduced in December by Texas Republican Representative Lamar Smith, passed the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, according to a spokesman for Smith. The bill proposes freeing ISPs from liability when they report suspected cybercrime, such as an e-mailed bomb threat that crosses their network, assuming they act in good faith. It also calls for strengthened penalties for cybercrime and increased funding for a government-run centre to detect security threats.

Our prevailing business is the business not of information but of enjoyment, the feeling of feelings, to which we give as much time as we can manage, not only at home but in the car, at work, or walking down the street. We seek and sometimes find a laugh from a sitcom joke, an erotic twinge from an underwear ad, a jolt of rhythm from a radio playlist, a sensation of moving with remarkable speed through a video game. Even the quest for information includes the quest for the delight to be found in retrieving it -- a quest, that is, for a feeling.

Trustees pin budget on 'pretend money' | Board banks on $50 million in unannounced grant money, saying it's 'drawing a line in the sand' News - Ottawa - canada.com network

Last night, after a rather acrimonious debate, trustees voted in favour of a plan to add another $23.6 million into revenues.

The money would reflect a number of expenses the board believes the province should be covering, including $5 million to bring its funding level up to the same level of its sister Catholic board, plus another $5.6 million to reduce shortfalls in textbooks and school supplies.

All told, the two proposals add up to about $50 million in hypothetical money.

BLAME CANADA The New Yorker: The Talk of the Town

The New North seems so insolent, in fact, that some Americans already think things are getting out of hand. (By week's end, Russia and South Korea, nursing their own grievances, had gone Canadian and challenged the Olympic officials, too.) The online Weekly Standard, which is not usually hostile to unilateral action, lectured the Canadians on the importance of not letting short-term rage run away with the long-term good. The Standard recommended that "Canadians should swallow hard, keep the silver, and use their bully pulpit to shame the sport into reforming the way it's officiated. It's not fair and it's not right, but it would be the noble thing to do." This may be just the beginning of a backlash against the New North, keyed, it seems, to a single alarming thought: what would happen if everybody in the world demanded to have it their way whenever they were really, really sure that they were right? As an anxious American reflection, it had an almost vintage Canadian feeling.

Honking horns filled the air in communities from B.C. to Newfoundland. In Ottawa, Canada Day came early on Parliament Hill as revellers crowded beneath the Peace Tower, hugging and singing.

The American players behaved reprehensibly on the ice -- no finesse -- except for Richter, the American goalie, though half his blocks were dumb luck. He nearly scored for us by dropping the puck down the back of his shirt. You may have seen me telling the Russians to quit whining the other day -- an understandable reaction on my part, I think, considering how stupidly they're acting over the skating gold -- but in the hockey, if yesterday's game (disclaimer: the only one I saw) is any indication, the refs were letting the Americans get away with almost any roughhousing crap they wanted.

If Canada had lost, as the commercial goes, they woulda heard us in Salt Lake.

I want one of these Sigma Corporation Japan

The breakthrough Sigma SD9 camera with FOVEON® X3TM image sensor is the world's first image-sensor that features three layers of photo detectors. The layers are embedded in silicon to take advantage of the fact that red, green and blue light penetrate silicon to different depths allowing full-color to be measured at every pixel. The layers are positioned to take advantage of the fact that silicon absorbs different colors of light at different depths, so one layer records red, another layer records green and the other layer records blue, This means that for every pixel on a FOVEON® X3TM image sensor, there's actually a stack of three photo detectors, forming the first and only full-color capture system.

School vouchers | A Supreme opportunity Economist.com

The question at the heart of the case is whether vouchers that allow parents to send their children to religious schools violate the constitution's separation of church and state. The example that the justices are being asked to consider—that of Cleveland—could hardly be more perilous for supporters of school choice. In Milwaukee, which also has a large school-choice programme, a third of the 10,000 participants are enrolled in non-religious private schools. But in Cleveland almost all the participating private schools are affiliated with religious organisations. When the Cleveland programme was first set up, a quarter of scholarship children attended non-religious private schools; now, largely because two private schools have opted into the public system as charter schools, only about 4% of voucher pupils attend non-religious private institutions.

Sex and Sensibility by Jerry Saltz The Village Voice: Art

Unlike most 20th-century art movements, which were based on formal breakthroughs, surrealism is predicated on a revolution in form and subject matter. There's more to it, in other words, than realist techniques and wacky subjects (think René Magritte). Following Duchamp's lead, artists like Joseph Cornell, Francis Picabia, Jean Arp, and Salvador Dalí (all of whom are included in "Desire Unbound") worked with found objects and assemblage. At the Met you can see Dalí's silly but still strange Lobster Telephone and his Venus With Drawers. The pebbles embedded in the surface of Bather (1928), his marvelously sicko painting, on the other hand, show how experimental and visionary Dalí was, especially early on. And don't miss his Metamorphosis of Narcissus, which Dalí showed to Freud, who found it "tedious."

2002 Internet Art Commissions Guggenheim Museum

By the time the mainstream art world awakened to the telecommunications revolution of the 1990s, a new landscape of exploration and experimentation had already dawned outside its window. Art on this electronic frontier--known variously as Internet art, online art, or net art-matured at the same breakneck pace with which digital technology itself has expanded. Less than a decade after the introduction of the first image-capable browser for the World Wide Web, online art has become a major movement with a global audience. It took twenty years after the introduction of television for video artists such as Nam June Paik to access the technology required to produce art for broadcast television. Online artists, by comparison, were already exchanging text-based projects and criticism before the Internet became a visual medium with the introduction of the Mosaic browser in 1993. By 1995, eight percent of all Web sites were produced by artists, giving them an unprecedented opportunity to shape a new medium at its very inception. Since that time, art on the Internet has spawned countless critical discussions on e-mail-based communities such as the Thing, Nettime, 7-11, and Rhizome.org. Encouraged by a growing excitement over the Internet as a social and economic phenomenon, proliferating news articles and museum exhibitions have brought online art to the forefront of the discussion of art's future in the twenty-first century.

In his report, Dr Bryce claimed that Indian children were being systematically and deliberately killed in the residential schools. He cited an average mortality rate of between 35% and 60%, and alleged that staff and church officials were regularly withholding or falsifying records and other evidence of children's deaths.
Further, Dr Bryce claimed that a primary means of killing native children was to deliberately expose them to communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and then deny them any medical care or treatment - a practice actually referred to by top Anglican Church leaders in the Globe and Mail on May 29, 1953.

All across the region, colonial governments cracked down hard, rounding up the cargo prophets and imprisoning them. Planters and other Western commercial interests, who coined the term 'cargo cult', saw it all as madness which demonstrated the ignorance and superstition of their workforce. More liberal whites attempted to explain to the locals that cargo wasn't produced by magic, but by hard work and the product of generations of technological progress, and the only way in which Melanesian societies were going to become rich in cargo was by working and earning it. To the locals, the subtext of this explanation was clear: the whites were politely refusing to give up the secret of their cargo.

Observers say the Army is using its political muscle to keep ranking officers off the conviction sheet. Another worry is that President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who took office last July with military backing, has so far shown little enthusiasm for punishing human-rights abuses committed by Indonesian soldiers. The Dutch report concluded that members of Indonesia's Battalion 745 - an Army unit that has since been disbanded - killed Thoenes Sept. 21 on a road outside Dili. A subsequent Monitor investigation revealed that a Battalion officer, only hours after Thoenes's death, told the soldiers to keep quiet about that and other incidents. "Don't even tell your wives," he said.

Gold Medal Variations By Aaron Marr Page Gold Medal Variations By Aaron Marr Page

The articles all mysteriously fail to mention the Czech "back-up judge" who was in news reports just yesterday. Today the story, as the NYT tells it, is that "with the French judge's vote for the Russians thrown out, the result was a 4-to-4 tie and a second gold medal awarded." But the Czech judge reportedly voted for the Canadians, so the inclusion of his vote would push the tally back to 5-4, in their favor. Today's Papers counsels Sale and Pelletier to reject the duplicate and hold out for solo gold. Of course this would mean prying the gold from the Russian couple's fingertips and ruining their country's 40-year gold medal streak in the pairs competition. It would probably also start some sort of Russo-Canadian land war in Alaska or thereabouts. Yet justice must be done.

With the ouster of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban from Afghanistan, a nation has begun rebuilding roads, clearing mines, and, um, catching up on porno. Satellite dishes are popping up all over the country, drawn to the hundreds of foreign channels available, including a few featuring lurid material. One, entitled "100 percent hardcore," in actuality offers nothing of the kind, but then gyrating topless women might mean more to men unaccustomed to the sight of a naked ankle. Guesthouses in Kandahar have recently been crowded with enthralled Afghan men, who frenetically try to change the channel when a female Western aid worker passes by. Even with crushing poverty, many have scraped together the cash to purchase six-foot dishes for about $100 and eight-foot dishes with a digital receiver for about $250. Much of the equipment is brought in from Pakistan. "I've been in business a month, and I have sold nearly 400 dishes," said satellite television shop owner Abdul Wasi, according to Reuters. "My shop is always busy. Everybody wants to watch satellite television."

For some time now, the latest motto of Kenyan education policy has been "Free primary school for everyone." This is part of an anti-poverty strategy which the Kenyan authorities worked out with strong support from the IMF and World Bank. But President Moi's dictum was accorded an ambivalent reception. While it delighted Kenyan parents, especially of the less prosperous variety, school principals, the education minister and other school administration officials raised loud objections. Without school fees, they declared categorically, there would be no education at all. As often happens in Kenya, the subject then faded from public view, disappeared from the headlines, and now no one really knows just how to proceed.

News Shorts | Love in the Holy Land? A personals puzzler News Shorts | Love in the Holy Land? A personals puzzler

A Middle Eastern mystery has arisen amid the usual transgender-seeking-transgender ads in the Village Voice, New York's alternative weekly newspaper. Out of the 88 women-seeking-men personals in this week's edition of the paper, 16 of them are purportedly from Palestinian babes seeking Jewish Israeli men. Moreover, a number of these women say they're looking to settle down--in Israel. One personal writer says she'd love to "return to ancestral home for Palestinian-Jewish Valentine's Day in the Galilee"; another says, "YOU claimed our FALAFEL, olives, oranges, music, houses as yours; I need you to get me home." The ads have alarmed some in the Jewish community, who wonder whether it's part of a conspiracy by Palestinians to acquire citizenship by marrying--and then dumping--unsuspecting Israeli singles. The Village Voice's ad department is currently investigating the identities of the Palestinian ad holders, according to the New York Post, which reported the wave of strange personals yesterday. There were similar ads posted in the Village Voice in July of last year, according to the Post.

Was euer man thus serued?
Amidst an Ocean of Delight,

Shew me no more those Snowie Brests,

Where, whilst mine Eye with Plentie feasts,

O TANTALUS, thy Paines n'er tell,

'Tis nothing to be plagu'd in Hell,

Clip me no more in those deare Armes,

The Company Presidency The Company Presidency

In retrospect, it's unclear whether the Bush dynasty built Enron or vice versa. In 1985, when Enron was formed, the Bushes were an important political family. George Bush, as vice president, headed the Reagan administration's task force on energy policy. But in terms of Texas oil money and stature, the Bushes were third echelon. When George W. ran for governor of Texas in 1994, Ann Richards, the Democratic incumbent, joked that of the oil companies he had started or been involved with, none had made a profit. Enron's rise, with the Bush family's help, in the 1990s rearranged the energy power structure in Texas and the nation, and put the Bush entourage in clover. The question now is whether what went up together will come down together.

Many BuzzFlash readers were surprised that we didn't list MORE of the actions taken by the White House on behalf of Enron once the Bush administration was placed into office by the Supreme Court. Why didn't we note that the Bush administration was trying to force the Taliban to give the U.S. oil pipeline rights through Afghanistan prior to September 11th (with Enron a likely beneficiary)? Why didn't we list the 17 ways the Cheney Energy report was similar to Enron's wish list? Why didn't we take note of the huge tax break and rebate earmarked for Enron in Bush's "stimulus" bill? Why didn't we didn't we list all the Bush appointees from Enron? And so forth.
The answer to these questions is simple: BuzzFlash didn't have enough space to list all the high and low profile efforts the Bush/Cheney team took to try and save Enron from collapsing.

Bourque HotNews | LIBERAL PARTY AT WAR Bourque HotNews | LIBERAL PARTY AT WAR

Call it Jean Chretien's worst case scenario: open warfare among those who would succeed him.
Bourque has learned that this weekend's skirmishes between forces loyal to Liberal leadership frontrunners Paul Martin and Allan Rock signal nothing less than the overt manifestation of a deep imminent desire among liberal loyalists for change at the top that guarantees massive blood-letting within party ranks as ordinary Liberals scramble to take sides.
Yes, it can be argued, the incumbent Prime Minister presides over his party in a Milosevician fashion, thanks to a series of majority successes at the polls and the unquestionable backing of devious backroom lapdogs such as ghoulish henchman Eddie Goldenberg, one of the most unloved persons in the party.
But times they are a changing thanks to an overt power lust among ambitious type "A" Liberals anxious to gain control over the levers of power.
While it is noted that an angry Finance Minister Paul Martin said today in Quebec City that his skirmish with Industry Minister Allan Rock "is the very worst kind of politics", the truth is that the worst is yet to come. And when it does, many of today's top political names will be swept away by the tide of change.
Through the course of a tumultuous day, Bourque spoke with a number of key Liberal operatives, including key supporters aligned with Rock, Martin, and the status quo (Chretien). All agreed that the immediate future presents a nightmare scenario for all Liberals because a massive shift in political loyalties has been unleashed.
"There is no going back", as one top Martin aide put it.
Several top Liberals concluded that Chretien's position at the head of the party is at risk. Indeed, one top Chretien lieutenant who earned his stripes with a critical role in the coup d'etat against John Turner admitted that his pony may well suffer the same fate. This is a previously incomprehensible position for Canada's top political leader.
A key Allan Rock booster remained unequivocal. "Pierre, a whole new generation of Canadians want a leader who is of our era. The '60's are over and Chretien needs to follow Herb Gray out the door."
Worse were the comments offered up by a top Ottawa lobbyist known by many to be a Paul Martin stalwart. Under promise of anomymity, this great bear of a man insisted that his team "is at the end of our rope. All systems are "go". Come hell or high water, the leadership race is now underway, and to the victor goes the spoils."
Ominously, he added that "as a Liberal, you are either with us or against us".
Developing.

"Apparently the desert in Spain that they were filming on was also where NATO does bomb runs, and even though the military were meant to give warning when they were about to blow the DNA out of the landscape, it didn't quite work out that way. So on the first day they had to contend with explosions and swooping aircraft, and this on a set with horses on it. On Day 2 they went back to the same set in the desert, only this time a huge, and I mean HUGE tempest blew in from nowhere, and the heavens opened. The whole set was washed away in a flash flood. Day 3 was the clear up and salvage day, just cleaning the cameras and trying to sort the costumes out after the apocalypse. Meanwhile, all this time Jean Rochefort had been suffering not from a hernia or back problems, but a prostate infection which left him virtually unable to move. Apparently it took two helpers to get him off his horse all the time, because he was in such agony. Day 4, they shot in the desert again, but because of the storm the ground was a completely different colour. Day 5, and Jean Rochefort was flown to a Paris hospital, and that was as far as they ever got with filming. The insurance company gave them a month to recast the pic, but it wasn't going to happen so the plug was pulled and the equipment sold off.

"Police officers are in some pretty difficult situations, (and) to have their professional business spill over into their personal lives, it's terrible," said state Sen. Bill Finkbeiner, R-Kirkland, the primary sponsor. "You don't have a First Amendment right to harass and intimidate."
Finkbeiner said the legislation was prompted by a Web site created last year by Bill Sheehan and Aaron Rosenstein, two local network engineers. The site posted rosters of 16 local law-enforcement agencies, along with salaries, addresses, phone numbers and, in some cases, Social Security numbers.

Kirkland is also suing Politech.

A spokesman for the government, which under the president, Muhammad Khatami, wants reform, presented Mr Bush°Øs remarks as evidence that, despite the government°Øs clear stance, an °ƒinterfering minority is taking foreign-policy decisions°±. Rather than repudiate Mr Bush°Øs allegations that Iran is engaged in pursuing weapons of mass destruction, exporting terror, and repressing its citizens, the spokesman simply demanded proof for all this.

A company that had ethics, that treated the breadwinners (programmers) with respect, a company that could afford to help people and give away software and training, while still having enough left over to grow and save a few $million in the bank.
That is, until the venture capitalists arrived on the scene. Lying to customers and employees became commonplace. Greed replaced philanthropy as each of the company's unique programs was dropped. But, this is a company, and the goal is to make money -- any positive impact on the world is secondary, right? The real question is: how much money did they make?

Straight Goods - Canada on the path to a security state Straight Goods - Canada on the path to a security state

Just as people were hurt in 1919 when police were ordered to clear the streets of protesters, people are being physically assaulted in this day and age, with tear gas, pepper-spray, rubber bullets, etc. [. . . ].

Why does the Canadian left insist on treating the APEC pepper spray as if it involved serious police brutality? I lived in Eugene, Oregon and Santa Barbara, California, for a few years during the 90s, and in Eugene, the police would occasionally tear gas what they deemed overly energetic fraternity parties. Tear gas is a hell of a lot more humane than the Chinese tanks or the Taliban braided metal whips -- it's even more humane than the LAPD. By insisting that tear gas, pepper spray or rubber bullets are severe modes of repression, the Canadian left undermines its own credibility, which ensures it will not be perceived as a coherent alternative to the mushy Liberal centre -- which means our next government will be right wing thugs who are just as naive, but who happen to know something about marketing.

Computor developments are being followed with interest and with some understandable apprehension by the companies that now supply the bulk of the business machines in use. If Lyons°Ø example were to be followed widely, a big section of their market would be cut from beneath them. Their answer has been to produce a poor man's computor, a machine that calculates electronically, but has neither the ability to store data nor the power to plan its own operations that are peculiar to a full-sized electronic brain. These less ambitious machines have their place in office routine, especially when the calculations involve sterling. The idiosyncrasies of British currency make calculations, carried out mechanically, slow and difficult, and they hold up the other high-speed machines in a modern office. Electronics eliminate the bottleneck. Both International Business Machines and Powers-Samas have had some success in selling these calculators. Lloyd's underwriters and Coventry City Council will both use the IBM machine; Sainsbury, and several motor manufacturers are using Powers-Samas. In the IBM machine each new set of instructions is fed into the machine on punch cards before the work starts; in the Powers' machine, the instructions are provided in the form of pre-set circuits and the operator switches from one to another. Their cost works out at between °Ã100-°Ã200 a month for rental or °Ã6,000 for outright purchase.

The Diary of Nancy Crick

The Diary of Nancy Crick -- I quote the entire 'about' page as her site is highly overloaded and you may not be able to reach it.

I am dying slowly of bowel cancer.
There is no escaping it.
I want to die at the time and place of my choosing, with my loved ones around me. But the law of Australia does not allow me to do this. The law of this land condemns me to end my life alone, so that my friends and family are not incriminated by my choice to die by my own hand when I choose to do so. This law is wrong, and I am not afraid to say so.
As my time approaches I envy those who had the opportunity, and fortitude, to travel to the Northern Territory, to avail themselves of the only humane and rational law relevant to my circumstances, permitting the terminally ill to seek and obtain assistance from a medical practioner to end their life at the time of their choosing.
Until our government decided to put an end to it.
That leaves me with very little choice.
So, with help from my friends, I have set up this site to record my diary entries, my thoughts and musings, including photos of the things that are important to me, as long as I am able to do so.
This said, welcome to my diary!

Baumeister and his colleagues write: ''People who believe themselves to be among the top 10 percent on any dimension may be insulted and threatened whenever anyone asserts that they are in the 80th or 50th or 25th percentile. In contrast, someone with lower self-esteem who regards himself or herself as being merely in the top 60 percent would only be threatened by the feedback that puts him or her at the 25th percentile. . . . In short, the more favorable one's view of oneself, the greater the range of external feedback that will be perceived as unacceptably low."

Child Brides - Are "starter marriages" new? By Katie Roiphe Child Brides - Are "starter marriages" new? By Katie Roiphe

The familiar sense of victimhood that permeates the book seems a much more telling sign of the times than Paul's argument itself. The idea is that the culture has tricked her, not that she has made a mistake. This way of thinking does seem characteristic of our generation: the desire to lose one's private sorrows in a sociological trend, to surrender all responsibility for your actions to the "culture" that shapes you like Silly Putty. I have no doubt that writing the book made the author feel better and, as she suggests, helped her to explain what happened to her divorced parents, but Paul doesn't in the end seem to come to any conclusions.

After a night of hard partying in Mexico in 1968, Cassady wandered onto a deserted railroad, intending to walk fifteen miles to the next town. He fell asleep on the way, wearing only a t-shirt and jeans. It was a cold rainy night, and Cassady was found beside the tracks the next morning. He arrived at a hospital in a coma and died a few hours later. It was February 4, 1968. Kerouac would die a year later.

Enron Scandal Shocks Even Those Who Helped It Along Enron Scandal Shocks Even Those Who Helped It Along

The law toughened the procedural rules for investors and gave executives legal immunity for making questionable financial projections. It generally eliminated the "joint and several" liability of accountants, which would make their deeper pockets available to compensate investors, particularly when companies have little or no money to satisfy damage claims.

Attorney General: "America Must Cease to be a Lurid Statuary of Deviant Sex" - WHITEHOUSE.ORG Attorney General: "America Must Cease to be a Lurid Statuary of Deviant Sex" - WHITEHOUSE.ORG

As you know, I have always aspired to the example of 14th century Vatican censors in all that I do. Whether it's registering patriots or losing elections to a dead man, I bring with me an almost feverish aversion to even the very thought of genitals - whether they be those of others or my own. It is for this reason that I have found myself increasingly distressed by the rampant proliferation of so-called public "art" with no shame - "art" which aggressively thrusts its impossibly large genitals directly into the eyes of our children, penetrating their little eye sockets deeper and deeper with every shameful glance! And so I say to you today, with God as both my witness and co-pilot, America must cease to be a lurid statuary of deviant sex!

Daimnation! Daimnation!

Jonah Goldberg writes that he'll take money from just about anyone who offers it to him. In fact, he'd be happier to make a paid speech before his political opponents than before his ideological allies, because "taking free cash from your enemies is an even bigger no-brainer than taking it from your friends. It makes your enemies poorer and you richer, win-win." [. . .] Well, it's actually the radical anarchists of Chumbawumba who've been using this strategy before Goldberg thought it up.

I gather Mother Teresa did this too, but continue.
