UN field commander Daniel Opande said the peacekeeping force should congratulate itself "for a job well done".
He told the rebel commanders: "Your task now as civilians is to sustain the peace you have now given your people, especially the children who have to go to school."
The rebels earned a reputation for press-ganging children into their ranks and cutting off limbs in a war marked by brutality to civilians on all sides.

"The Mayor of Toronto is THE FRIEND OF HELLS!" screamed the front page of the province's best read daily, Le Journal de Montreal, which also ran logos of the mayor gladhanding the outlaw biker atop its three pages of coverage on the largest outlaw biker gathering in Toronto's history.
The handshake from Mel also made the front page of Le Soleil and appeared in La Presse, appearing just as a series of biker trials are beginning in Quebec.

Nigerian woman to appeal stoning sentence Nigerian woman to appeal stoning sentence

Safiya Husaini was sentenced in October by a court in Sokoto after being found guilty of adultery. Because she is a divorced woman who gave birth to a baby girl in Feburary, the court ruled she was guilty of adultery.
Ms. Husaini's lawyers will argue she was raped and, therefore, not liable under the law. They will also argue that the alleged offence took place before Islamic sharia law came into effect, making the sentence retroactive.

To start, Lynch has a good deal of musical talent. Pop A Little Bit Special into your CD player and before you have processed the Lyrics your ears will be happy. The album starts off with a lovely little "Lullaby" that sounds much like any other soothing bedtime story: "Hush, little girl, sweet baby don't cry tonight/Daddy is here and he'll sing you a soft lullaby tonight." But Lynch's warped sense of humor shines through in the next few lines, as he explains why Mommy's not here anymore: "Cause daddy like porno and ten dollar whores."

Pastrana was responding to a 14-point negotiating blueprint produced by commanders of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia -- known by the Spanish initials FARC -- on the brink of a government deadline after two days of intense talks with a special U.N. envoy. The rebel negotiating document, produced with the help of U.N. mediator James LeMoyne, was "not satisfactory for the government or the president," he said.

Enron Sought Aid of Treasury Dept. to Get Bank Loans Enron Sought Aid of Treasury Dept. to Get Bank Loans

Administration officials said Enron did not get any special help from them. But Democrats in Congress are gearing up for hearings into the close ties between Enron and Mr. Bush's administration.
In a letter sent to Mr. O'Neill and Mr. Evans today, Representative Henry A. Waxman of California, the senior Democrat on the House Committee on Government Reform, asked whether the administration's contacts with Enron had given them early warnings of the company's financial trouble that could have helped avert big losses for shareholders and employees.
"The purpose of the request," Mr. Waxman's letter said, "is to determine why the administration apparently did nothing to mitigate the harm of the Enron bankruptcy to thousands of its employees and shareholders."

Rule of Gun on the Rise After Ouster of Taliban Rule of Gun on the Rise After Ouster of Taliban

The outside world is trying to help bring some measure of stability to the country. The United States, or "the Big Boss," as many here call it, continues to bomb suspected Al Qaeda and Taliban hide-outs almost nightly in the south and east of the country in an attempt to root out terrorists. International peacekeepers are beginning to patrol the capital, Kabul. Aid agencies are flying and trucking humanitarian supplies as quickly as possible into a country where the United Nations operates on its highest threat level.
Despite such efforts, this is a land so perilous it can boggle the mind of anyone who has lived in peace. Afghans say that, since the fall of the Taliban, murder, bribery, kidnapping, extortion--crimes committed primarily by soldiers working for one warlord or another, most believe--have only grown worse.

"It is not a reasonable expectation for there to be an immediate de-escalation on the border," the Indian foreign minister, Jaswant Singh, said Sunday. "We have to see if there are any gaps between what is said and what is done." Mr. Singh said "the lessening of tensions on the border is entirely dependent on the steps inside Pakistan to operationalize the steps that have been stated by his excellency, General Musharraf."

Though there are no firm rules on how long accounting firms must retain documents, most hold on to a wide range of them for several years. Any deliberate destruction of documents subject to subpoena is illegal. In Arthur Andersen's dealings with the documents related to Enron, "the mind-set seemed to be, If not required to keep it, then get rid of it," says Ken Johnson, spokesman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, whose investigators first got wind of the Oct. 12 memo and which is pursuing one of half a dozen investigations of Enron. "Anyone who destroyed records out of stupidity should be fired," said committee chairman Billy Tauzin, a Louisiana Republican. "Anyone who destroyed records to try to circumvent our investigation should be prosecuted."

Silicon ~ Technologies That Time Forgot: The ZX Spectrum Silicon ~ Technologies That Time Forgot: The ZX Spectrum

One of this writer's favourite programs generated random numbers and just shoved them into the memory at random addresses until the computer crashed with a multicoloured flashing mess on the screen. Then you pulled the plug out and started again. I wouldn't have any idea how to do that to a PC and I doubt a PC could survive it.
