This novel I'm working on

This novel I'm working on had better be lucky seven, or I'm giving up writing altogether. Some days it seems like I've put some good and true stuff in there, and some days -- like today -- I think about the university only a ten minute walk from my house which offers some kind of filthy business degree, and which has already admitted me once, even if it was ten years ago when I was a hard eyed autoexpatriate in my mid-teens. If I'm going to be this broke I'd better be writing something worthwhile, and if I'm not, I might as well at least go make some money in the last remaining days of the Gadarene swine. I'm a pretty enough phrase turner to be welcome in marketing.

War blurs the distinction between a government's foreign policy and its citizens, a distinction that was obviously and tragically not appreciated by the WTC and Pentagon murderers.

I'm not certain it's appropriate to distinguish between a democratic government's foreign policy and its citizens, given that the citizens are supposed to be the ones selecting the officials that make the policy -- as opposed to a dictatorship, monarchy or oligarchy, where the citizens have no such input.

AIRLINE PACKAGE HARKS BACK TO CHRYSLER BAILOUT

"The most common form of stupidity is forgetting what we are trying to accomplish," wrote Frederick Nietzsche. Our goals in responding to the airline crisis must be to ensure efficient and secure air travel capacity; to avoid needless job losses; to minimize adjustment costs; and to uphold norms of economic fairness. A bailout that simply shores up corporate balance sheets is unlikely to be the best way -- perhaps not necessary; certainly not sufficient -- to accomplish these tasks.

Place yourself for a moment in the position of the card issuer. Do you imagine that a committed terrorist would hesitate to put a gun to your child's head, demand that you issue the card, and then kill both of you to keep you quiet? If you resist, do you suppose that the next card issuer will also resist? How long do you suppose it will take for your body to be discovered? Certainly hours, perhaps days. The terrorist only needs one or two hours.

A call has gone out for a Canadian cabinet-level position similar to the new Bush appointee responsible for homeland defence.
But Canada had such a cabinet position, created by trivia Prime Minister Kim Campbell and opposed and eliminated by Jean Chretien in and after the 1993 election. Doug Lewis was Canada's first (and last) Minister of Public Security.
In a 1993 speech, Lewis said "safety and security does not only concern prisons, police and domestic crime. It also concerns terrorism, illegal immigration and international crime. And it is in these areas that the new Department of Public Security will be focussing its efforts. In addition to the previous Solicitor General responsibility for federal police, security, corrections and parole, my new portfolio now also includes those parts of the immigration program relating to operations abroad, applications processing and enforcement. Eventually it will also include Customs responsibilities relating to border protection and control."

Cuba, the country that has suffered the most and the longest from terrorist actions, the one whose people are not afraid of anything because there is no threat or power in the world that can intimidate it, with a high morality Cuba claims that it is opposed to terrorism and opposed to war. Although the possibilities are now remote, Cuba reaffirms the need to avert a war of unpredictable consequences whose very authors have admitted not to have the least idea of how the events will unfold. Likewise, Cuba reiterates its willingness to cooperate with every country in the total eradication of terrorism.
An objective and calm friend should advise the United States government against throwing the young American soldiers into an uncertain war in remote, isolated and inaccessible places, like a fight against ghosts, not knowing where they are or even if they exist or not, or whether the people they kill are or not responsible for the death of their innocent fellow countrymen killed in the United States.

It's really unfortunate that the one show that overtly 'celebrates freedom of speech' is hosted by such a mediocre boob.

Some of them chose paperless electronic tickets, and -- for reasons hard to grasp -- entered in their frequent-flier numbers.

People will not be threatened by ABMs or war, the new threats will come through suitcase bombs in airports, attacks on tourist sites and release of biochemical/biological agents into densely populated areas or water sources." Fortress or Freedom?

A new breed of American warrior is lining up to fight the war to eliminate evil in the world. This warrior is not pledged to fight for a flag, but to fight for a system that will provide freedom and liberty for every one, every where. These warriors are sophisticated and educated and they know the world better than any other generation. They will not be satisfied to protect America by use of oppression, terrorism, and totalitarianism like the anti-communism cold warriors. Because, they understand the best way to secure the safety of freedom is to free the world.

Their weapons will be targeted directly at the systems that perpetuate poverty, oppression, and intolerance. There enemy is no single government or ideology. Their battles will be unconventional and not only fought in the air, sea, and land, but will also reach every congress, boardroom, university, temple and church where freedom is not priority one. Their tactics and strategies will be unprecedented as the world is invaded by the forces of freedom. The very strongholds of evil will be dismantled from within as those people within begin to understand that freedom is no longer merely an American slogan to hide the truth of greed and over indulgence. But, Freedom and Democracy, those American ideals, will become the absolute goal of this new breed of warrior because they know that this is the only way America will every be truly safe.

Americans are at rare inflection point in history where the united drive of all Americans can be focused on a single goal. A time when Americans are willing to put aside more trivial pursuits and work together for a single goal. It is time to choose whether the goal will be an America Fortress continuously under attack by a world of people who are denied freedom or a war ranked by the new breed of American Freedom Fighters, that will not stop until every one, every where is free.

I choose freedom over walls.

Their targets may have been NYC and DC but the terror has spread to every corner of the US. Hate is never the correct answer.

U.S. political leaders said yesterday that countries that harbour terrorists should be held partially responsible for what the terrorists do.

The evidence suggests that includes Canada.

[...]

Critics warned the Ressam case exposed Canada's susceptibility to terrorist activity. How could both men remain in Quebec despite the fact they were turned down as refugees? How did intelligence agents lose track of Ressam after linking him to a ring of Islamic holy warriors?

Quebec (the province theoretically in Canada in which these attacks were apparently at least partly staged) is the only Canadian province to run its own immigration, exempt from federal immigration regulation. Quebec politicians repeatedly inform the rest of Canada that Quebec should in fact be its own country. If this is the case, let Quebec bloody take responsibility for this right alongside Canada -- if not by itself.

When modern writers talk about how to 'write properly', one of the things you'll often hear is "show, don't tell" -- to cut out all exposition. Well, exposition was good enough for Colette, Tolstoy, Hemingway, Alec and Evelyn Waugh, Homer, Ovid, Apuleius and the Bible. The real point is not to be boring -- so long as you're not boring you can talk about anything you bloody well want in any manner you choose. And if you are boring, all the technique in the world will just make you a more versatile bore.

First, the protesters are right: the media has spilled rivers of ink over a few violent protesters. It might have been better to explore decades of mismanagement at the World Bank and the IMF. On the other hand, protesters should know that when up to 100,000 people plan to descend on the nation's capital, the media is going to ask a few questions. They won't wait until next week's press conference. Excluding the media from strategy sessions, then complaining when the IMF and World Bank do the same, only makes matters worse.

Hare's research upset a lot of people. Hare's research suggested that some people behaved badly even when there had been no early trauma. Moreover, since psychopaths' brains were in fundamental ways different from ours, talking them into being like us might not be easy. Indeed, to this day, no one has found a way to do so.

Someone stole Peter David's wife's backpack filled with stuff like wedding photos, for gods sake! Any sluggites knowing of anything regarding this theft, you must help us with any information! Here's Peter's request:

"My wife, Kathleen, had her backpack stolen at Dragon*Con in Atlanta while she was pitching in at the Del Rey Booth in the Exhibitor's Hall. Although it had been secured behind the booth, someone came in from behind and grabbed it.

Among the items in it were a manuscript, a Palm Pilot, and-most frustratingly-our entire album of photos from our wedding and honeymoon, which we'd brought down to show to Harlan and Susan Ellison. There's one of two possibilities. Either the thief grabbed such obvious valuables as the Palm Pilot, dumped the rest, and it's now sitting in an Atlanta landfill somewhere...or else the thief was a fan so twisted that he considers the album featuring photos of Kathleen, myself, Harlan, George Takei, Bill Mumy and others to be a lucky, one-of-a-kind souvenir. If it's the former, obviously there's no hope. If it's the latter, this creep will sooner or later want to show them off. Should this happen and you become aware of it, please contact me at PADGUY@aol.com immediately. Trust me, I'll make it worth your while."

On this path we work responsibly and joyfully to make our lives, and our societies, into expressions of our love for ourselves, for each other, and for the living Earth. In this direction we honor our longing to give our children, and all children, a world with clean air and water, with blue skies and abundant wildlife, with a stable climate and a healthy environment.
