Why sponsor the naming of a baby? It will be years before your company gets the kind of publicity you're looking for! I'm available now! Think of the audience you'll reach. If your target market is young, educated, upwardly mobile professional single women, I am your ideal marketing tool. In exchange for your renumeration, I will promote your company for the REST OF MY LIFE. I will legally change my name to add your company name to the beginning of my name. Also, I will tattoo your corporate logo on a 1"x1" area of my shoulder. You could not ask for a better representative of your company. I am intelligent, and poised for success. I have no criminal record, or morally questionable activities of any kind on my record. I have a bachelor's degree, with honours. Be on the cutting edge of a new kind of advertising. Act today! The New Yorker: The Critics: A Critic At Large - JAVA MAN How caffeine created the modern world.
It is worth noting, as well, that in the original coffeehouses nearly everyone smoked, and nicotine also has a distinctive physiological effect. It moderates mood and extends attention, and, more important, it doubles the rate of caffeine metabolism: it allows you to drink twice as much coffee as you could otherwise. In other words, the original coffeehouse was a place where men of all types could sit all day; the tobacco they smoked made it possible to drink coffee all day; and the coffee they drank inspired them to talk all day. Sonic.net staff was standing by waiting for any sign of trouble -- and encountered a non-event.It turns out that, to foil the worm, www.whitehouse.gov's IP address was changed, and some backbone providers filtered the old IP address at their borders. (A traceroute showed the old address being blocked at the other end of our UUNet T3.) Since the worm couldn't contact the web site, the denial of service attack never happened. Maybe It's Your Platitude (washingtonpost.com)
Cliches aren't necessarily false. Some are simply meaningless. Perhaps art does capture the eternal human spirit (No. 2), but what, exactly, is the human spirit, why is it eternal, and how does art "capture" it (the way a vacuum cleaner captures dust)? Our cliches about art can also be radically contradictory. Compare the cliches about critics (No. 48): We despise them, and look to them for endorsement. Or the role of violence in art (No. 42). Worms that can be targeted to take over specific systems and report back once they succeed may be developed. Programs similar to the original concept of a worm--called a "tapeworm" in John Brunner's 1970s science-fiction novel "The Shockwave Rider"--that have a limited number of infected computers linked together could stealthily wend their way through the Internet. Brunner was goddamn brilliant, and his extremely visionary work has mostly been either ripped off by inferior hacks like William Gibson (one of the lousiest authors I've ever had the misfortune to encounter) or ignored because it was 'genre fiction'. This is going to be a very interesting time because many experts are saying that the home electronics system of the future is going to be built around these high-end video-game consoles. They'll be the heart of the home network and the glue that holds your stereo, television, computer, and even your appliances together. Posted by at July 11, 2001 01:45 PM

A small assortment of astonishingly loud brass instruments raced each other lustily to the respectiveends of their distinct musical choices as the gates flew open to release a torrent of tawny fur comprised of angry yapping bullets that nipped at Desdemona's ankles, causing her to reflect once again (as blood filled her sneakers and she fought her way through the panicking crowd) that the annual running of the Pomeranians in Liechtenstein was a stupid idea. -- Sera Kirk Posted by at July 11, 2001 11:19 AM

Friday, a European Moon Farmer
Friday, a European Moon Farmer reader asked, "The Canadian Alliance mentioned in the piece [Journey into darkness: Covert research in the Canadian racist underground ]; they used to be the Reform Party right? Were they the ones that had some major leadership fighting and had started to gain ground? Did they continue to do so or are they still a marginal force only?" My response: The Rise of the Rebel Alliance Alliance numbers are now exceedingly poor (Stock [Stockwell Day] having a 16% approval rating), whereas Tory numbers are climbing reliably. Joe [Clark] amuses himself in public by commenting that he refuses to comment on how big an idiot Stock is, but he says he's willing to take any Alliance guys that come over and are willing to talk sense. He has an approval rating -- today at least -- of a whopping 60%. Posted by at July 11, 2001 06:04 AM

MarketWatch.com Inc., owner of the CBS MarketWatch.com financial news Web site, said it will quit giving reports to advertisers on their ads' ``click-through'' rates, a common measure of effectiveness for online ads. Tracking the number of consumers who click on an Internet ad makes online advertising appear less effective than it actually is, MarketWatch.com Chairman and Chief Executive Larry Kramer said in an interview. The company now will provide click- through rates only to advertisers who specifically request them, he said. Concern that online advertising is ineffective has contributed to a decline in ad sales on some Web sites, analysts have said. Ad sales at San Francisco-based MarketWatch.com declined by 41 percent to $5.18 million in the first quarter. ``The click-through rate is almost meaningless to most advertisers,'' Kramer said in an interview. ``The value of online advertising is getting your name in front of 9 or 10 million people a month. That's what we're selling.'' Posted by at July 09, 2001 02:46 PM

A Welsh cyberpunk who claimed he hacked with only the best of intentions has been sentenced to three years of community rehabilitation and psychiatric care. Nineteen-year-old Raphael Gray called himself the "saint of e-commerce", and his shtick was breaking into internet companies' networks to demonstrate the fragility of their security. Gray seems to have made his point. He hacked into thousands of networks, including those of FeelGoodFalls.com, MoStorefront.com, Albionsmo.com and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Gray drew the FBI's attention after he got his hands on 23,000 personal credit-card numbers. He posted many of them online, including one that purportedly belonged to Bill Gates. Reports state that Gray used the number to ship Gates a big batch of Viagra, although there is evidence that this never happened. Gray entered guilty pleas to charges of theft and hacking, as well as to deliberately accessing sites with credit card information. Posted by at July 09, 2001 07:26 AM

Technology Review - Claude Shannon: Reluctant Father of the Digital Age
Within a year or two of his paper's publication, however, Shannon was horrified to find that information theory was becoming -- well, popular. People were saying ridiculous things about the amount of information coming out of the sun, or even the information content of noise. Scientists were submitting grant applications that referred to "information theory" whether their proposals had anything to do with it or not. "Information theory" was becoming a buzzword, much as "artificial intelligence," "chaos" and "complexity" would in the 1980s and 1990s. And Shannon hated it. In a 1956 paper entitled "The Bandwagon," in the journal Transactions on Information Theory, he declared that information theory was being greatly oversold. "It has perhaps ballooned to an importance beyond its actual accomplishments," he wrote. Posted by at July 09, 2001 05:50 AM July 08, 2001

Tropic of Cancer is best known, of course, not for the picture of underground Paris it paints (brilliant though that is) but for its sexual content. Joe and his mates, hahitus of the brothels, have a lot of sex in this book. For this reason Tropic of Cancer has the reputation of being a dirty book. This is puzzling. Whatever else it is, it is definitely not classic pornography in the sense that it would stimulate anyone before sex (which is what pornography is supposed to do). Posted by at July 07, 2001 04:17 PM

Electronic reusable paper is a display material that has many of the properties of paper. It stores an image, is viewed in reflective light, has a wide viewing angle, is flexible, and is relatively inexpensive. Unlike conventional paper, however, it is electrically writeable and erasable. Although projected to cost somewhat more than a normal piece of paper, a sheet of electronic reusable paper could be re-used 1000s of times. This material has many potential applications in the field of information display including digital books, low-power portable displays, wall-sized displays, and fold-up displays. As for "boycott," however, meaning to ostracize or refuse to patronize a person or business to coerce a change in conduct, we do know exactly where the word came from. Back in the mid-1800s, Captain Charles Boycott was the local agent for a British landlord in County Mayo, Ireland. He was also a royal jerk. Boycott was so inflexible and cruel to the poor farmers who rented land from him that they decided that no one would deal with him, not even to sell him food or harvest his crops. The farmers made Captain Boycott so miserable that he eventually gave up and fled back to England. Thus the term "boycott" was born, meaning to organize with your neighbors to "ice out" and refuse to deal with a person or business until they change their attitudes or practices. Rheal Mathieu will spend one month in jail for targeting the coffee shops in Montreal for having English-only names on their signs. [...]Mathieu was a member of the Front de liberation du Quebec, FLQ, during the 1960s. In 1967, at the age of 20, he was sentenced to nine years in jail for two bombing deaths. He has since received a pardon. So remember, if you want to burn down your store/house/car and collect the insurance money, hire a French separatist and have them claim it was politically motivated. Doesn't even matter if someone gets killed in the process! Posted by at July 06, 2001 10:16 AM July 02, 2001
