Gordon believes that computers introduce a "strange disconnect" into social interactions, and that it is difficult for some young adults to understand that what happens on the end of a modem line to someone you can't see, hear, feel, or know can still have a genuine impact on a real person.

Hey, Wired, as fascinating as that article is, why have your assholes chosen to file it under 'women'? Why not file Bill Joy under 'men'?

I'm thirty myself, as of I'm thirty myself, as of today. My midlife crisis is already in progress. Yesterday, I got told I probably have a job offer for over $50,000 a year.

I have no idea what to do about it :)

I've also decided I'm thirty years old, I play Dungeons and Dragons, I love the game, I love to write for it, and I'm great with that.

With a hack-hack here and a hack-hack there, Attrition.org, a company that tracks online vandalism, has been overwhelmed. It has announced that it no longer will archive vandalized web sites. Attrition has been operating "mirrors" of defaced sites, which preserve the damage for the benefit of security professionals, reporters and other interested parties long after companies have repaired their hacked home pages. But online vandalism has been mounting lately, and Attrition's staff has been unable to keep up. In the past month alone, the company has been faced with mirroring as many as 100 graffiti-splashed web sites a day--more than three times the total web vandalism in 1996 and 1995 combined. Attrition has been something of a labor of love, run by a small group of volunteers--lately at the expense of some Attrition members' day jobs. The Attrition.org web site will remain online, and its other sections, such as its statistical analyses of web vandalism, will still be maintained.

On the morning of April

On the morning of April 25th, our office and the unique building in which it was housed were destroyed in a fire. In addition to the Baffler office, the building was home to a close community of artists, writers, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses. No one was injured in the fire, but the physical damage was extensive. Worse, however, was the devastation of a vital center of cultural activity.

We're struggling to cope with our losses and those of our friends. We have set up a temporary office and will do our best to publish Baffler #14 (which was sent to the printer a week before the fire) as scheduled. It now appears that our subscriber list is recoverable, so we are hopeful that everyone will get their copy of the magazine. For now, though, we have no computers, no contact lists, no rolodexes, no desks, and no desk lamps. We and our friends are determined to rebuild and recover, but we need help. For those who can, please send donations made out to The Baffler Recovery Fund to:

The internet has emerged as a place to honor the dead, and a German man is catching flak, albeit indirectly, for having done so. Bernd Bruns, who is 53 years old, created a web site for his dear Mutter--and emblazoned the URL on her headstone, right beside her name. Cemetery officials in the city of Gladbeck have ordered Bruns to strike the web address from her gravesite. St. Lamberti Cemetery authorities consider the URL to be tacky and say it looks like an advertisement. Also, many cemetery visitors have spoken against the presence of the URL, saying that it trivializes a solemn place. So far, Bruns has not caved in to the officials' demands. Bruns complains that the cemetery's standards are too strict and that they have imposed a numbing uniformity upon the bereaved and that grieving relatives should be able to grieve how they see fit.

Daisy Fraser Did you ever

Daisy Fraser

Did you ever hear of Editor Whedon
Giving to the public treasury any of the money he received
For supporting candidates for office?
Or for writing up the canning factory
To get people to invest?
Or for suppressing the facts about the bank,
When it was rotten and ready to break?
Did you ever hear of the Circuit Judge
Helping anyone except the "Q" railroad,
Or the bankers? Or did Rev. Peet or Rev. Sibley
Give any part of their salary, earned by keeping still,
Or speaking out as the leaders wished them to do,
To the building of the water works?
But I--Daisy Fraser who always passed
Along the streets through rows of nods and smiles,
And coughs and words such as "there she goes,"
Never was taken before Justice Arnett
Without contributing ten dollars and costs
To the school fund of Spoon River!

Court TV Legal Documents: Sidney Blumenthal Suit Against Matt Drudge Court TV Legal Documents: Sidney Blumenthal Suit Against Matt Drudge

Presidential aide Sidney Blumenthal filed a $30 million defamation suit against Matt Drudge, after the famed online columnist published an August 10, 1997 story in which he alleged Blumenthal "has a spousal abuse past that has been effectively covered up." Blumenthal vehemently denied the charges and Drudge retracted the allegations the following day. Also named in the suit is America Online, the online provider which hosts Drudge's column called the "Drudge Report." But on April 22, 1998 a federal judge dismissed AOL as co-defendant in the case, citing that an Internet service provider was not liable for content provided by them through a third party -- that is, Matt Drudge.
