It looks like the batteries in the Anne Robinson robot starts leaking voltage at this point as the gaps between her phrases get longer and longer in what can be described at best as a way of increasing attention and at worst as a way of being incredibly annoying: "What colour is... the... character... of Colonel... Zip plaintiffs get settlement: Iomega will give rebates to millions of customers as part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit that claimed its Zip drives are defective. U.S. customers who bought a Zip drive from a store or authorized manufacturer between January 1, 1995 and March 19, 2001 will be entitled to rebates worth up to $40 for various Iomega products. The settlement comes out of a lawsuit filed in Delaware in 1998, which claims the company's mainstay product had a manufacturing flaw that often caused the drives and disks to fail. The suit also alleged that many of the drives made constant clicking noises nicknamed "the click of death" before failing. Plaintiffs' attorney Mike Dodge estimated 28 million Zip drive purchasers are part of the suit. Iomega (IOM) will also donate $1 million in products and services to schools, pay attorneys fees for the lawsuit and provide free technical support for customers who experience the clicking. Say your ex-wife wants to find you. She could simply type your UI into an Internet-connected PC or wireless phone. The software on that device contacts a name server to match the UI to your name. The name server then passes the request to another server that sorts through a database containing your updated contact information and a privacy agent. The server then gives your ex the information she wants. On the other hand, you might not want her to find you. No problem. You'll set up rules that will tell the agent who can-and cannot-get your contact information. Posted by at April 08, 2001 07:30 AM

In 1985 Chuck Hull was a chemist doing research and development for a maker of house paints, and management wanted the outdoor enamels to dry faster. His group developed a paint that was sensitive to sunlight and that went from liquid to solid in a hurry. While working on the project, Hull had a once-in-a-career flash of insight: He realized that with enough layers of paint hardening quickly, he might be able to produce three-dimensional objects. Feminists, in recent years, have picked up the law and economics ball and have run with it. It's a very interesting inversion of conventional positions, but a number of radical feminists now are strongly advocating the commodification of family relations. What they say is we want to commodify, to put a pecuniary value on, the work that women do outside the markets, because if it's not commodified, not monetized, it?s not recognized in our society as productive work. When a consumer picks up, say, a tube of Crest, a signal is sent to the store shelf, which contains printed circuit boards. (If the consumer puts the Crest back on the shelf, that is recorded, too.) The shelf transmits each "transaction" to a computer, which tracks the number of times consumers grab P&G products. That data is then transferred to P&G, which in theory can adjust its manufacturing and distribution plans according to which products are moving off the shelves. Posted by at April 07, 2001 08:27 AM
