Unless it achieves a new iconic status, a tall order in an accelerated market, a newly glamorized product can go from timeless to ephemeral, functional to fabulous, humble to heroic -- and then disappear. One such icon after another might succumb, not because of failed functionality or market appeal, but because it couldn't survive the transplant to the hothouse of prime time design.
