Earthquake Hazards Program: Earthquake in WASHINGTON
A major earthquake occurred about 10 miles (20 km) northeast of Olympia, Washington at 11:54 AM MST today, Feb 28, 2001 (10:54 AM PST in Washington). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.8 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. I was a couple of miles away from the center and three floors up at 10:55 this morning. The two rows of lab benches shook like crazy but all the equipment was strapped down, so nothing fell on me. My cell phone web browser refused to work during the hour I spent standing around in the parking lot waiting to be sent home. Posted by at February 28, 2001 02:02 PM

Other slang words for the losers of the in-out mentality of the 1960s were chaser (a loser who will make every possible mistake), clod, Clyde, dibble, dip (emphasis on the dull), doofus, dose, douche bag (nice talk!), farmer, nerd or nurd, seed, wimp (passive, weak), and winner (lushly ironic). Hanging Harris math quiz renews concerns
Donald Mountain, a math teacher in London, Ont., asked Grade 13 students how hard voters would have to kick [Ontario Premier Mike] Harris to move him to a 60-degree angle if the premier was hanging from a rope. In another question, the Saunders Secondary School teacher allegedly referred to an old rumour Harris has 11 toes by stating that the premier "had to grow an extra toe so that he could count to 21." George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," 1946
George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," 1946 this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists -- is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. One cannot change this all in a moment, but one can at least change one's own habits, and from time to time one can even, if one jeers loudly enough, send some worn-out and useless phrase -- some jackboot, Achilles' heel, hotbed, melting pot, acid test, veritable inferno, or other lump of verbal refuse -- into the dustbin, where it belongs.

Can Design in America Avoid the Style Trap?
Can Design in America Avoid the Style Trap?
Once in the cycle of forced design and redesign -- the style trap -- it can be hard to escape. Unless it achieves a new iconic status, a tall order in an accelerated market, a newly glamorized product can go from timeless to ephemeral, functional to fabulous, humble to heroic -- and then disappear. One such icon after another might succumb, not because of failed functionality or market appeal, but because it couldn't survive the transplant to the hothouse of prime time design. It's a vision of a seamless world of wireless access, where the business traveler or cafe habitu can keep in touch via the Web just by walking into the right spot, turning on the laptop and opening a browser. Other services are envisioned as well. The technology has been shown to work even if the laptop is moving, so drive-by access from a car may be possible. Growth of domesticated transgenic fish
We microinjected rainbow-trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs from a very slow-growing wild strain with a salmon gene construct overexpressing growth hormone (construct OnMTGH1). Like coho salmon3, the transgenic trout grew much faster than non-transgenic sibling controls (Fig. 1a), achieving a 17.3-fold difference in weight by 14 months post-fertilization (non-transgenic: fish weight, 9.7 += 0.6 g; length, 9.3 += 0.1 cm; n = 247; transgenic fish: weight, 167.6 += 14.9 g; length, 24.2 += 0.9 cm; n = 40). The amount of growth enhancement was comparable (17.6-fold) in a first-generation (F1) family line established from these fish. Posted by at February 16, 2001 11:07 AM

Polymerization of the healing agent is then triggered by contact with an embedded catalyst, bonding the crack faces.
