The trees in my backyard
The trees in my backyard have exploded with the colors white, pink, purple, red, and yellow! The wind picked up the plum tree blossoms and for a while it was raining pink flakes that slowly floated down on the grass. On a morning like this the glare from the window behind my computer makes the monitor mostly unreadable, but if I unfocus my eyes I can see the reflected image of my backyard. Since my monitor is unreadable I just turn my chair around and surf the real world for awhile. Posted by at April 30, 2000 09:58 AM

Feeling powerless is futile, so step off the path, knock over the "Don't Walk on the Grass" signs and make your own path. Don't wait for a leader or a guide or an angel, because you already know where you want to go. Step off the path and let the world energize you with the raw power of being the blazer of new trails. If the new path ends at a cliff, then sprout wings and fly. All you have to do is make the first step, the rest is just hard work.

I really dislike call waiting.
I really dislike call waiting. I got a new phone and it has call waiting. I don't get a lot of calls, but last night I got two calls at the same freaking time. I mungled the call waiting procedure unknowingly hanging up on the first person who called and then excitedly asked the second person if I could call them back. I was excited because I was trying to fumble through the call waiting process on this new phone. Anyway, after blurting out the request to the second person they agree to a call back, but apparently as I found out later, they take it personally because I am speaking in a loud excited voice, I try to switch back to the first person only to find myself disconnected from both calls. I call the first person and apologize for my lack of talent using call waiting. And after a shorter then expected chat, I call the second person and get connected to their voice mail. It hasn't been that long and I think, okay this is punishment for not taking the call earlier, so I leave a polite voicemail. After a few minutes of the silent treatment, the second person calls back, thank goodness my punishment was short. It is explained to me that this person does not enjoy being screamed at and in fact reacts quite badly to it. Oh geez. So, I have to explain that my new phone has call waiting and that I really hate call waiting and that it was just my frustration at having to deal with call waiting that made me speak in an excited loud volume. I apologized and promised to control myself better in the future. And that's why I hate freaking call waiting.

At first I thought this was a good thing, but then I realized they were putting an engineer in charge. The world doesn't need more technology leadership. The world needs to put the poets, painters, and philosophers in charge. There's no stopping the bull rush of technology, but maybe if we put the artists in charge, the future won't be limited to "form matches function." I am not just talking about marketing gimmicks like flavored Mac's. Technology should disappear into the background noise while enabling increasing powers of expression. I started off the day
I started off the day listening to Low Rider as rendered by Cheech and Chong, and drinking Coke out of a glass marked "1st Annual BOB WOOD Fund Raising Dinner". Nothing fancy is involved in real social change. Society right now is a dramatically fat woman who has been stuffed into a size 4 cocktail gown and size 2 shoes, who is keeping it all together by dint of will, but who sure as hell didn't look like she expected or dreamed to. All she has to do is look at herself in the mirror, say, "I am not size 4" -- and feel okay about that. All good change comes from that. Posted by at April 07, 2000 07:10 AM

I may not be thy love: I am forbidden Indeed I amthwarted, affrighted, chidden, By things I trembled at, and gorgon wrath. Twice hast thou ask啡d whither I went: henceforth Ask me no more! I may not utter it, Nor may I be thy love. We might commit Ourselves at once to vengeance; we might die; We might embrace and die: voluptuous thought! 23. We TwoHow Long We were Fool啡d. Whitman, Walt. 1900. Leaves of Grass
WE twohow long we were fool啡d! Now transmuted, we swiftly escape, as Nature escapes; We are Naturelong have we been absent, but now we return; We become plants, leaves, foliage, roots, bark; We are bedded in the groundwe are rocks; We are oakswe grow in the openings side by side; We browsewe are two among the wild herds, spontaneous as any; We are two fishes swimming in the sea together; We are what the locust blossoms arewe drop scent around the lanes, mornings and evenings; We are also the coarse smut of beasts, vegetables, minerals; We are two predatory hawkswe soar above, and look down; We are two resplendent sunswe it is who balance ourselves, orbic and stellarwe are as two comets; We prowl fang啡d and four-footed in the woodswe spring on prey; We are two clouds, forenoons and afternoons, driving overhead; We are seas minglingwe are two of those cheerful waves, rolling over each other, and interwetting each other; We are what the atmosphere is, transparent, receptive, pervious, impervious: We are snow, rain, cold, darknesswe are each product and influence of the globe; We have circled and circled till we have arrived home againwe two have; We have voided all but freedom, and all but our own joy.
